The race for supremacy in the Saudi Pro League has become one of the season’s most compelling storylines, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Ivan Toney emerging as central figures in a fierce Golden Boot battle. As Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli push for the league title, the two prolific strikers remain locked in a tight race to finish as the competition’s top scorer.

Recently, the drama surrounding this rivalry extended beyond the pitch. A controversial moment following one of the league’s most intense derbies placed Toney under scrutiny, raising questions about potential disciplinary action that could impact the rest of the season. With crucial matches ahead, the situation has drawn widespread attention, including from Ronaldo, whose pursuit of another scoring crown could be affected by the outcome.

The controversy arose during the latest Jeddah Derby, where Al-Ahli faced Al-Ittihad at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. The match delivered excitement and tension, with Al-Ahli securing a convincing 3-1 victory, temporarily moving to the top of the league standings and boosting their title hopes. Toney played a decisive role, opening the scoring early with a close-range finish. This result not only secured derby bragging rights but also had major implications for the Golden Boot race.

Toney’s opening goal was especially significant individually. It brought his league tally to 24 goals this season, solidifying his lead in the Golden Boot standings. By comparison, Cristiano Ronaldo currently has 21 goals, trailing by three with nine matches remaining in the campaign.

With both players leading their teams’ attacks, the battle between Ronaldo and Toney has become a defining narrative of the Saudi Pro League season. However, the celebration following Toney’s goal soon overshadowed the performance itself.

The Complaint That Triggered an Investigation

After the derby, Al-Ittihad filed an official complaint with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). The club accused Toney of making inappropriate gestures toward Al-Ittihad supporters during his goal celebration and requested disciplinary action from the league’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee.

The complaint referenced Article 1/72 of the competition’s regulations, which covers misconduct during matches. If upheld, Toney could face a minimum six-match suspension, a penalty that would significantly impact both the title race and Golden Boot contest.

For Ronaldo, such a suspension could have opened the door to reclaim the scoring lead in the final weeks of the season. However, the disciplinary process ultimately led to a different conclusion.

The Disciplinary Committee’s Final Decision

After reviewing the case, the Saudi federation’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee issued its official ruling. The committee rejected Al-Ittihad’s complaint against Ivan Toney. According to the official statement, while the complaint was accepted procedurally, it was dismissed on substantive grounds after examining the evidence and related reports.

“The committee clarified that it has completed the regulatory procedures related to the complaint… On the other hand, the committee decided to reject the complaint on substantive grounds after reviewing the facts and reports related to the incident.” This ruling means Toney will not face any disciplinary punishment for his celebration.

A key factor in the decision was the referee’s official match report. Reports from Al-Riyadiyah indicate that the referee’s documentation did not mention any inappropriate behavior by Toney during the match. “Ivan Toney will not be punished by the Disciplinary Committee because the match referee’s report did not include any note about him.”
